The 24-70mm 2.8 is obviously the most popular work horse lens it seems for wedding shooters but I was wondering if the 24-120mm f4 vr would be a major step down? The images I have seen on various sites seems to show it is quite capable as a workhorse lens plus about $600 cheaper and I have 50mm 1.4, 85mm 1.4 and 80-200mm 2.8D in the arsenal

The 24-200 is a one-lens solution. The 24-120 is a two-lens solution, combining the 24-120 with a longer lens, perhaps 100-400. The 24-70 is perhaps then a three lens solution, perhaps with the 70-200F2.8 and a longer lens as well (perhaps one day a 200-600). I'm leaning towards a 3 lens set. 14-30, 24-120 and 100-400.
You can have a 24-120 and the 28-75 and even the 40mm f2 prime for the price of the 24-70 2.8 IMHO get either the 24-120 or the 28-75 depending on your needs, and save the difference for the announced 70-180 2.8.
I had the 24-120, ended up selling it and getting the 24-70 f/2.8 (not the VR). I actually miss the 24-120 to some extent, I thought the IQ was just fine. I shoot shows, low light, so I need the f/2.8 and the faster AF. The AF is the biggest difference I noticed. But, for walkaround, I would take the 24-120 if I still had it. . 460 485 199 430 468 438 339 358
